Jerome Williams becomes first to beat one opponent with three different teams in the same season

Jerome Williams dominated the slumping Athletics on Saturday afternoon, tossing seven shutout innings to lower his ERA with the Phillies to 2.45 over eight starts. The Royals lost to the Tigers earlier and the Mariners are just underway against the Astros, to the Athletics maintain a narrow 0.5-game lead for the first of two AL Wild Card spots.

Williams’ win was a baseball first in an odd way. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Williams became the first pitcher to beat the same team three times in a season, each with a different team. Williams won against the Athletics as a member of the Astros on April 26, and defeated them again as a member of the Rangers on July 25.

Merrill day-to-day with ‘wind taken out of him’ after head hit

New Jersey Devils GM Lou Lamoriello said Jon Merrill is both “fine” and “day-to-day” after he was helped off the ice on Friday and didn’t practice Saturday, per the Bergen Record.

Lamoriello previously described Ryane Clowe as “fine” last season, but it turned out the forward had a concussion. Clowe recently received medical clearance to participate in training camp.

In this case, Merrill “had the wind taken out of him,” according to Lamoriello. Merrill sustained the injury when he accidentally crashed into Ruslan Fedotenko and their heads collided. The 22-year-old defenseman appeared to be woozy, but Fedotenko was left with the impression that Merrill was feeling better once they got a chance to talk in the locker room.

Devils coach Pete DeBoer has also gotten a chance to talk with Merrill and is “not concerned about it long term.” However, he’s not sure if he’ll skate Sunday.

Video: Umpires review, uphold Nick Franklin homer that hit the “C” ring at Tropicana Field

Rays second baseman Nick Franklin gave his club a 2-0 lead in the top of the second, or so he thought, when he clubbed a Hector Noesi fastball way up in the air down the right field line. Right fielder Avisail Garcia ranged back and appeared to run out of room when, all of a sudden, the ball dropped straight back down and out of play.

The initial ruling was a home run, but White Sox manager Robin Ventura asked the umpires to review the call. According to the ground rules at Tropicana Field, any ball that hits either catwalk labled the “C” or “D” ring is a homerun. Franklin struck the “C” ring. As expected, the umpires upheld the initial ruling of a home run.

The homer is Franklin’s first in the majors as a member of the Rays.

Manhunt For 5 Escapees From Central California Jail

Be on the Lookout.

CBS San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS/AP) — Authorities were on the hunt Saturday for five men who escaped from a central California jail.

The men broke out of the Madera County lockup late Friday night, sheriff’s spokeswoman Erica Stuart said. The inmates were gone for about an hour before corrections officers discovered they were missing around 9:15 p.m., she said.

Authorities from across the state were looking for Juan Lopez, 33, Jorge Lopez-Diaz, 26, Abel Ramos, 25, Ricardo Cendejas, 19, all of Madera and Roel Soliz, 29, of Chowchilla.

The men were being held in custody on various charges including attempted murder and armed robbery, Stuart said. It’s unclear how they escaped, she added.

“We don’t know how they got away, all we know is that they took off on foot,” Stuart said. “We’re looking for them. They should all be considered armed and very dangerous.”

The men were last seen wearing either…

Oculus Unveils New Virtual Reality Headset Boasts With 360-Degree Head Tracking

CBS San Francisco

MENLO PARK (CBS/AP) — Oculus has unveiled a new prototype of its virtual reality headset. However, the VR company still isn’t ready to release a consumer edition.

The hew headset intended for creators of VR experiences is nicknamed Crescent Bay and features a higher resolution and refresh rate, integrated headphones and 360-degree head tracking.

“That was not easy,” Oculus CEO Brendan Iribe told the audience Saturday at the company’s first-ever developers conference. “It’s still not perfect. None of this is perfect yet, but it’s much, much better.”

Oculus’ headset covers a user’s eyes and can create immersive worlds that react to head movement.

The original prototype of the Oculus Rift headset was unveiled in 2012 and has received considerable attention from film and video game makers. Oculus released a second prototype headset to developers earlier this year. Iribe said 100,000 development kits have been shipped to 130 countries.
